Traffic Accident Statistics

without comments

David asks…

Is insurance really necessary? How many accidents really happen, how come they get bailouts without payouts?

I was thinking about the statistics. In comparison to how much yearly revenue is generated, they manage to have an awfrul lot of profit for a company that is supposed to pay for personal disasters. Then when a disaster happens they don’t pay anyone. Then they go whining to congress, they put a few senators in thier pocket and the only thing they can seem to pass these days is a bailout for insurance. What the F***?
Think about how many different times you drive a day. Then multiply that with the number of people insured, say 100Mil. Then look at the total number of traffic accidents in 1 day. Compare the numbers and the number of accidents is less than a fraction of a percent compared to the instances of driving. Insurance industries are for profit. And boy are they.

Questions, comments, critisisms, concerns?
I do not have any claims. I don’t even own a car. I just noticed ya’ll out their giving money to make a few people rich.
Bailout? Do you watch the news. I suggest you get a tv. After all, that appears to be your educator these days.
That’s right, I said They don’t pay anyone. I guess we don’t need lawyers if the insurance agencies are paying out like they are supposed to.

admin answers:

You don’t have to have insurance. You can just as easily go to your local Department of Motor Vehicle’s and ask if you can pay to be an “uninsured driver”. They will charge you a fee (here it’s around $500.) and you can drive legally, with no insurance.

However, when you have an accident, it’s out of your pocket where the liability comes from. If you manage to have an at-fault accident and cause multiple injuries, that’s going to set you back quite a bit. (Assuming you’re an average, and not filthy rich human being.)

Insurance companies DO pay out. It’s just a matter of which company you have the pleasure of dealing with. I work in Insurance and have about fifty claims come across my desk a week. Add to that the # of people that show up at my office to meet an adjuster, and it’s quite a few people. (Claimants AND Insureds.) Out of hundreds of people, I’ve seen very few leave angry or upset.

Shop around if you don’t like your current company. Find a company you trust, a staff you like and go from there.

Good Luck.

Richard asks…

STATISTICS OF THE WORLD?

William asks…

where can i find annual stats or reports of road closures for the cajon pass?

I am trying to locate an annual report or statistics for how often the Canjon Pass in San Bernardino has been closed for a period of time, for any reason, weather conditions, traffic accidents, fire, etc. Preferably for the last 5 years. Thank you.

admin answers:

You should check with Caltrans District 8 as they have the responsibility for the roads in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties including I-15. They should have the record of these closures or be able to tell you where to find them. You can contact them at 464 West 4th Street, San Bernardino, CA 92401 or (866) 383-4631 or (909) 383-4631.

Good luck and safe travels!

Mark asks…

statistics homework question?

According to a published study, 1 in every 8 men has been involved in a minor traffic accident. Suppose we have randomly and indenpendently sampled 25 men and asked each whether he has been involved in a minor traffic accident. How many of the 25 men do we expect to have NEVER been involved in a minor traffic accident.

the answer is 21.875 but i dont know how to get that answer.
can someone please explain this to me.

thank you

admin answers:

So, if 1 in 8 HAS been in an accident, then 7 in 8 has NOT,
(7/8) X 25 = 21.875

Sandra asks…

car fax report of old lien/loan?

Hi,
I am planning on buying a car. I pulled up the car fax and it shows a loan/lien flag (5th line says Loan/Lien record(s)).
But in the history, it shows there was no lien/loan reported on the car the last time the car was transfered to a new owner (the person selling the car to me).
Should I be concerned that there is an outstanding loan on this car or a lien of some sort? Please help me figure this out.
Thanks!

I did see the title, he had it with him and the title was under his own name.
I checked his ID and the name on the car.
It seems the DMV transfered the car to him and carfax shows no lien reported on his transfer…
I also called the DMV of MN and WIS and they said no lien was due on the car… both said that they would be willing to transfers the car and no problems should be there

admin answers:

Do not buy the car, if the lien is not signed off, it is still there, If you do not have a title, this is why, if the owner claims to have lost the title or some such crap, it is not a paid off lien. Do not put down any money, until you contact the lien holder and see what it takes to clear the title, the lien holder must be satisfied first, in order to clear title,
This question is on here bi weekly, keep in mind, anyone too poor to pay off an old car, did not keep up the maintenance either, I got to the point long ago, where cleaning up other peoples dumb lazy crap is no longer entertaining. Good luck, its your money!!

admin answers:

Its obvious that they own most of the companies in the Data mining bussiness. Now All insurance companies consult Choicepoint C.L.U.E. Report before they aprove you for home or even car insurance. They know things about anyone like how many accidents you have, if you were at fault, and how many traffic tickets you have. Thats the new way for this companies to detrmine how much are they going to charge you for insurance. All you need to have is a couple of mistakes and boom you get stock with higher rates, awesome bussiness dont you think?. They have one of the biggest databases in the nation that now even FBI uses them or buy their information instead of doing their own investigations. How comfortable Aint it? There is no doubt that Choice point is one poses one of the most dangerous databases in america. And there is no way to put controls to their marketing of a citizen own and personal information. A monopoly ! We can agree they are the biggest in the market right now.

Richard asks…

What will the answer be about my pizza delivery job?

I applied for a delivery job and was told if my MVR (motor vehicle report) comes back clean I have a job. The only infractions I know were in an entirely different state; once a speeding ticket that was issued to me but not in my car and again with an accident that police were involved but me and the other driver did not go through insurance, we settled it on our own, so my question is would either of them show up because they were special cases and all together in an entirely different state?

admin answers:

Chances are they won’t show up

David asks…

I hit my neighbors parked car and it’s going to cost $2400. How much will my insurance go up?

I have Geico Insurance. 22/m and out of school. 1 at fault accident already on my record from 2005 and a ticket that should be off my record but shows up on motor vehicle report. Just got Geico Insurance about 2 months ago. Paying about $1150 every 6 months. Would it be better just to pay the guy off?

admin answers:

Your insurance will probably go up (who can say how much?) and since you’ve only been with your present carrier two months you might even be dropped, given your record. If you can “pay the guy off,” and if there was no accident report and no record of the accident, you might be better off. But as “dodge man” pointed out be aware of the risks.

Another thing … Even if you personally pay for the damage, if your insurance company finds out about the accident they may still raise your rates.

How do I find a list of traffic accidents that occurred in Midland Texas today from another city?

The love of my life fell off the planet around noon today. He was going home to catch some sleep because he doesnt get much sleep on the four days he has to on a drilling rig. I am in a town 7 hours away and cannot get there. I called the one hospital in Midland and the Police. He isn’t in either place. I’m hoping he is out partying, but this behavior is completely uncharacteristic of him. We talk to each other all day. He was headed to his mother’s house, but they haven’t seen or heard from him. I need to reassure myself that something horrible didn’t happen. What do I do?

Mary asks…

How many working hours are lost through traffic accidents in the UK each year?

The cost to industry must be horrendous. It is not just the time at the site of the crash but the knock-on time at hospitals, out-patient visits, sorting out insurance details, police interviews, sorting out temporary or new vehicle, court appearance where necessary and, of course, telling colleagues all about it.

admin answers:

I don’t know if you will ever get a truly accurate answer to this question. Think about the time for drivers and passengers of the vehicles involved, time spent by highways agencies clearing the road, police and traffic officers, ambulance and hospital staff, vehicle repairers, recovery companies, hire companies, insurance companies, law firms.

There are many companies who sole business it is to deal with traffic accidents – it keeps thousands of people employed each year.

Sharon asks…

Where can I get a record of all speeding tickets and traffic accidents?

Would the DMV have this? Is there a number I can call or do I have to go there?

Thanks!

Statistics homework help, please! Probability of car crash?

I wish I didn’t have to constantly post questions on my statistics homework, but my book isn’t helping me much at this moment. Someone please advise me on how to complete this problem:

The probability of a randomly selected car crashing during a year is .0480. If a family has 4 cars, find the probability that at least one of them has a car crash during the year.

To me, it sounds like it would be a 1/4 chance that one of the cars gets into a crash, but the .0480 statistic is throwing me off. Someone please explain. Thank you!

Linda asks…

When filing an income tax return, do I need to include insurance refund from auto accident?

When filing an income tax return, do I need to include insurance refund from auto accident? My car was total loss. My insurance pay off my loan for the car and gave me back $6000 after the payoff. Do I need to report this when filing my income tax return?

admin answers:

Assuming that they paid you the fair market value of the car, and that that was less than you paid for it in the first place, you do not need to claim that on your tax return.

George asks…

Can I claim a disability on my tax return if I was in an auto accident and havent been to work as of 2 months+?

I got into a serious auto accident, not my fault and totaled the new car. I haven’t been back to work as of yet and have been going to physical therapy. Can I claim anything on my taxes for 2010? Thanks!
I haven’t settled anything yet. I’m just currently still going to therapy.

admin answers:

No. You must have a doctors certification for permanently disabled.

David asks…

Should I get a lawyer to represent me for an auto accident?

Last week my friend and I got into an auto accident. We were both drunk when she drove 86 mph into a telephone pole. We were taken by ambulence to the hospital. I had a severe concussion and whiplash. It is less than a week, and I am in severe pain still. I have been thinking about getting an attorney to help me out. I would just like to know anyones opinions on using an attorney. This accident happened in Oregon. They driver (my best friend) was charged with a DUII.

admin answers:

Do you really want to sue your friend? Afterall, you WERE a willing participant by getting into a car with your friend who you knew was intoxicated. You say you’re best friends….do you think you’ll remain friends afterward? I guess you have to decide what’s more important to you, friendship or money.

If money is more important to you than friendship…..hire a lawyer if you like. Let him/her tell you how much of a jerk your friend is for drunk driving (believe me, she already knows), let him/her convince you to “listen to them” to get the maximum amount allowed under the policy and by law. And then give at least 33% of it to them for doing what? The same darn thing YOU can do on your own which is settle your claim.

But here is what you MAY want to consider talking to an attorney about….the laws on DUI vary from state to state and these laws can have a DIRECT impact on your ability to make a claim against your friend. Also, there’s a possible defense your friend has against any claims made by you, and it’s as I already mentioned…you KNEW (or should have known) the RISK of voluntarily getting into a vehicle with someone who you had reason to believe was intoxicated….in some states this is a VALID and LEGAL defense to deny any claim you may bring against her. The technical terminology is “assumed risk,” or “assumption of risk.”

My personal opinions about attorneys….unless one is killed or seriously injured (internal bleeding, amputation, coma) they are useless and you are just giving away money.

Laura asks…

what is the average settlement i can get for auto accident injury and suffering?

I was in auto accident 8/2010, i was paid for loss of my car and settled for my son. I had gone to back dr for 12 weeks an was released last week, i feel the guy at fault should pay up for medical bills and lawyer fees and suffering.
I was in accident 8/2010, i settled for loss of car and my son, MY settlement is still pending,
okok.. missin details.. there where 3 cases pending against the guy at fault.. MY CAR closed..myson Closed.. my case is still open and pending. I was not at fault in any way. i was hit head on.
my son and car was not represented by my lawyer, i am however. an we did sue right away. i lawyered up day after accident. my lawyer submitted dr results to the ins for guy at fault an wait for offer. i jus wanna kno what i am entitled to

admin answers:

Your lawer should have taken care of that.
You settled already for your son, that is very quick, usually takes more than a year for settlement.

If you went for 12 weeks you might get $5,000. Your lawyer will probably sue for 26,000.
5,000 for you, 12,000 for lawyer, 9,000 for chiro.

They all know the game. You should have sued right away though, don’t wait so long.

Statistically, over 70% of fatal motor vehicle accidents occur because:?

admin answers:

Alcohol?

Betty asks…

what is the single greatest factor in fatal motor vehicle accidents?

admin answers:

Driver error.
Vast majority of motor vehicle fatalities are due to the driver. Drunk driving is driver error. Texting while driving is driver error. Running a red light is driver error. Tailgating is driver error. Improper lane change is driver error.
So few drivers have much in the way of driving skill and situational awareness.
Few drivers these days understand the true meaning of DRIVING DEFENSIVELY. Is this phrase even being taught in driver’s education? If yes, then is the true meaning being explained? Based on all the bad drivers I see on a daily basis, the answer is NO.

Mark asks…

Can you have ANY accidents, motor vehicle tickets before, during, after NAVY boot camp or the Navy discharges you?

admin answers:

If you manage to get into a motor vehicle accident while in boot camp i will be most impressed. And no, you wont get discharged for a speeding ticket but if you lie about it to your command they might use that as grounds for demoting you or taking pay, and if you keep up the trend it can lead to a separation.

Traffic violations before you ship for boot camp should be fine as long as theyre documented if youre trying to get a job that needs a clearance.

Where’s the public outrage ? Why are SUV’s still legal at all?

Do anybody besides me read the article that said that SUV’s kill 10,000 + Americans a year due to rollover accidents ,that those 10,000+ deaths represent 1/3 of all US traffic deaths despite the fact that SUV accident represent only 3% of all traffic accidents. That’s an 11:1 ratio
Having driven the 3-D roads of the West and seen the deadly handling characteristics of SUV’s up close, I have no doubt that many of those fatal accidents were single vehicle accidents caused by the vehicle.
I also have no doubt that many of those rollover accidents and near accidents that didn’t result in fatalities scared the crap out of a lot of drivers.
Where is the public outrage ? Where are all the letter to our Congressmen demanding that we get these death machines of our roads NOW!!
Where’s Ralph Nader when we actually need him ?
WTF is wrong with us ?
Thanks for what I’m sure will be nice answers
I understand that they’re trying to make them safer But if all that after the fact engineering is necessary ,then the original product had to be a deadly piece of junk that should never have been allowed on American roads in the first place.

Does anyone know where I can find an article about the accident that happened on I-65 S around 2am?

I was stopped in Traffic on I-65S below Bowling Green, KY about an hour North of Nashville around 2:30am, this morning (6/4/07), so I’m assuming the accident happened around 2am. I heard there were 2 fatalities and possibly a 3rd. Does anyone know where I can find the newspaper article about it if there is one? I looked in the Lexington, KY paper, the Bowling Green paper and the Nashville paper! I’d appreciate it! Thank you!
I know. I even e-mailed a news channel in Kentucky and they didn’t know anything about it either. We finally got around at 5:30am. I took a picture of the semi that went off the road on the right. There was a guy running around that told us some information, he had friends toward the front of the line…seems strange like you said it was such a big accident and no reports on it….if you do find anything, please let me know!

admin answers:

I have no idea! We ran into the accident at 4am, and like you, I have searched everything and no one can tell us anything. That is so odd, a major interstate shut down for hours, and nothing in the news! My parents headed back home around 4 pm, and the traffic was still stopped!

Steven asks…

What is your opinion Undercover sting used to cite, deport Carlsbad day laborers workers create traffic?

What is your opinion Undercover sting used to cite, deport Carlsbad day laborers workers create traffic hazzards ?
In a new twist, Carlsbad police have adopted an old tactic to bust day laborers: undercover sting operations similar to those used against street prostitutes.

The undercover stings and the anti-solicitation law that police have been using to cite the workers have opened a legal can of worms.

Other cities in the county and in the country that have tried to regulate day laborers have run into similar problems: How do you restrict day laborers without running afoul of their right to seek work?

Police say they are simply trying to address a safety problem. It’s dangerous for drivers to stop on busy roads to pick up the workers, Carlsbad police Capt. Neil Gallucci said.

But migrant rights advocates say they see a more sinister purpose. It’s simply the latest scare tactic used by the city to get rid of day laborers, whom some residents consider an eyesore.

“Are you kidding me?” attorney Victor Torres asked. “If the issue is safety, why aren’t they enforcing the traffic laws that prohibit stopping in a bike lane or the red (zone) instead of using sting operations?”

Police said they do routinely also ticket drivers who stop illegally on the road.

In an Oct. 14 operation, police officers driving unmarked cars and wearing civilian clothes approached day laborers on El Camino Real and pretended to offer them work. The workers were driven a few blocks away where they were cited under the city’s anti-hawking ordinance, police said.

Nine people were cited and nine others suspected of being in the country illegally were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol, Gallucci said.

Safety first

Citing day laborers under the city’s anti-hawking ordinance is not new.

Police started using the anti-solicitation ordinance —– which was originally aimed at newspaper hawkers —- to cite day laborers in 2007. At the time, police said the department had received numerous complaints from area homeowners.

The anti-hawking law prohibits people from distributing materials or soliciting “business or contributions from any person who is traveling in any type of vehicle” along roads with a 35 mph or higher speed limit and on some streets with lower speed limits.

Thus far this year, 22 citations have been issued for violations to the city’s anti-hawking ordinance, Gallucci said. There were seven traffic collisions this year in the areas that were targeted in the Oct. 14 operation, he said, though there was no clear link between those accidents and the day laborers.

Car Accident Settlement

without comments

Thomas asks…

How much can I get from a car accident settlement if the other driver, who was at fault, has no insurance?

I was recently involved in a car accident. I am still pregnant (thank God), had my 2 y/o son in the car. Both vehicles were totaled and the other driver was at fault with no insurance. I am going to a chiropractor and my son had a laceration on his head, how much would be an average amount we could receive from the accident, or estimate?

admin answers:

Approx 10k, but if he had no insurance, zero if he has zero assets…

Mark asks…

what would my car accident settlement be worth?

I was not at fault. The other driver did not report it so my adjuster had to make the claim to the other insurance a week later. My car has some damage. I am now in physical therapy for my neck, shoulders, & back. My child was in the car but did not sustain injury. What kind of settlement is fair?

admin answers:

Each claim is evaluated on it’s own merits.

There is no chart that says you get X dollars.

We can’t answer this question for you.

Nancy asks…

Can I still file a case for a car accident settlement due to having cervical disk damage?

the accident happened 5 years ago… now my neck disc is all straight and i have chronic pain..
can i still get a settlement even though this happened 5 years ago and the effects show up now?

admin answers:

You can try, but it likely won’t work b/c it’s been so much time. Unless you can definitively prove that the damage is from the accident, which will be tough to do with 5 years between.

William asks…

How much should I ask for in car accident settlement?

My SUV was rear-ended by a tractor trailer on an interstate off ramp 3 months ago. I’m 34 & this was my 1st accident ever. My bumper only had $800 worth of damage. My 10-yr old daughter, 5-yr old son, and I went to the emergency room the next day because we had severe neck & back pain. We were diagnosed with muscle spasm. Two weeks later, my daughter & I started chiropractic care because our pain had not subsided. We went to the chiropractor for 2 months. My daughter has completely recovered and I only have mild pain in my neck when I turn it. How much should I ask for in my insurance settlement with the trucker’s company? (I live in N.Carolina)

admin answers:

I’d add in $1,000 for each of you, for pain and suffering. But I’d let the INSURANCE COMPANY make the first offer.

Car Crash Sound

without comments

William asks…

Song that sounds like singer from blink 182 about car crash i think?

This song sounded like the lead singer of blink 182 was singing it but it wasn’t by blink 182 and I remember somthing about an ambulance and I think it had to do with a car crash? It might be my angels and airwaves but what song is it? I don’t really know how to explain it any better because I heard it last year.

admin answers:

It could maybe be:

Thrice – Artist in the ambulance

Its about a guy who has a car crash and then the ambulance comes but the angels come and save him. :)

Susan asks…

A Car Crash is a horrible experience can you discuss what happened, as you remember it, after the accident?

I was involved in a car crash. My car crumpled like an old tin can. A driver rear ended me while I was waiting to turn into my housing edition. She did not see me she was reading and driving. Her engine block was cracked completly in half, My trunk ended up in my back seat My back seat was almost in my front seat. She survived the crash, my doors would not open.I don’t know what is impressed upon my memory more…the sound of the crash, like a bomb going off, ( metal cracking produces an excruciating noise) OR looking at her in my rear view mirror with her car burning…I eventually could unlock the door and there was not a scratch on me. Everything was broken in my car except me….well I had some PT and traction..nerve block, amounted to no big deal….oh yeah…gotta love that traction!..

Believe it or not I walked home from the crash and completed case notes for work!
.so please do tell about your experience possibly we can help one another.

I’ve had a few and they have all made me very afraid to drive in adverse conditions. When it rains I sweat and lock up and feel as if I’m losing control . When there’s a hill and I can’t see forward in the direction I’m going I lock up and panick and have to go very slow …all from accidents. My first serious accident I was alone at 3 in the morning and fell asleep due to exhaustion on a six lane highway. I tried to correct the wheel after waking up to a road sign. My SUV flipped over 3-4 times I remember the sound of glass popping and shattering around me. I felt it happened so slowly.I landed onupside down hanging from my seatbelt. I only had scratches on my palms and knees from glass and crawling out the broken window. Can’t remember how long I was wondering down the road b/c I was in a bit of shock and hit my head on the surroundings of the truck as I flipped. An off duty paramedic was on his way to jog and stopped and took care of me.
My second accident was from hydroplaning after my fiance tried to pass an 18 wheeler. We spun out and around several times before landing in the middle pasture of a highway and hitting a tree. The car was totaled of course but I only broke my glasses when I hit my head on the side of the window. Today I will not drive in rain/snow and HATE riding with others. I feel unbelievably out of control, don’t trust the tires or the action of others. I’m thinking about seeing someone b/c the sweating and freezing up scares me.

Robert asks…

Looking for a title of a movie that involves a car crash on a bridge?

the movie (I think) is about a man who is dying on a bridge after a car crash. But he doesn’t know he is dying. He is having flashbacks about a woman and I think he is trying to save her. I can’t remember, but I think that he thinks this woman is the person on the bridge dying… but it turns out to be him.

Does that sound familiar to anyone???

admin answers:

The movie is “stay”

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371257/

Great movie.

Paul asks…

What does it means when you dream about a car crash in the middle of a living room?

It’s really weird but i had a dream i had this gathering over someone’s house i don’t even know but 4 of my friends where there and the rest were adults what scared me the most was that we were talking about traveling and i asked my friend about her passport we were talking about it but suddenly we hear tyres squeak and something crashing… someone how there was a room on my left and i opened the door the only people who actually hear the crash sound were me and my 4 friends after that i open the door and turn on the light…
My auntie just had a car crash… she crashed against this sort of bookshelf and she was dead as if she just crashed into a lamp post the front of the car was totally damaged i just remember running to my mother crying telling her my aunt died..
The thing is there was no hole on the wall or whatever there was no way the car could of got in and the bookshelf looked so familiar as if i have seen it before but i don’t know where… i don’t talk to that auntie of mine cause she really hates me but i don’t understand why her????
Could any one could help me?

admin answers:

It could mean something sudden and major will happen in the future. It might not necessarily be this but something huge.

Or

just a nonsensical dream
